Since the recent move of the Lombok airport from Mataram to Praya, flying is now a much longer journey than taking one of the fast boats from Bali to the Gili Islands. It is also a lot more expensive as the airport transfer from the new Lombok International airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok (BIL) ) to the Gili Islands takes about 2 hours and costs almost as much as the flight.

Your choice of fast boat will depend on a couple of factors: where you are departing from and how long you want to spend on the boat rather than on the road. Boats departing from Padang Bai will have a shorter crossing than boats departing from Serangan harbour, but the drive to the harbour at Padang Bai could be much longer if you are staying in Seminyak for example.
